Why Houston Coils Need a UV Light

Filters catch what floats through the air. They do nothing about what grows on the coil itself, and that’s where Houston systems get into trouble. A coil coated in biofilm moves less air, makes the blower work harder, and is often the reason a house smells musty for the first few minutes after the AC kicks on.

UV-C light at 254 nanometers is the wavelength used for germicidal treatment. Aimed at the coil and drain pan around the clock, it breaks down organic growth before it has a chance to build up. In practice that means:

Less sludge in the drain pan, so fewer clogged condensate lines

How does a UV light work in my HVAC system? +

The lamp mounts inside the air handler, aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan. It gives off UV-C light at 254 nanometers, which damages the DNA of mold, bacteria and other microorganisms so they can't multiply. Because the coil is constantly exposed, organic growth doesn't get a chance to build up on it. Air moving past the lamp also gets some treatment, but the light's main job is keeping the coil clean.

Which PureUV model is right for my home? +

It depends on the size of your coil, how much space there is inside the air handler, and whether you also want odor control. Most single-system Houston homes are well served by the Pure M. Larger coils usually get the Pure MX or Pure MAX, and the Pure Elite makes sense if you're dealing with pet, cooking or smoke odors. Our technician will look at your system and recommend one before anything is installed.

How often does the UV bulb need to be replaced? +

PureUV recommends replacing the lamp every one to two years. UV-C output fades over time even while the bulb still looks lit, and Houston systems run most of the year, so we suggest checking it annually. Extreme Clean Club members get a free UV bulb check with their membership.

Does a UV light produce ozone? +

No. The PureUV lamps we install are designed to be ozone-free, and they don't use any chemicals or sprays.

Is a UV light safe for my family and pets? +

Yes. The lamp sits inside the closed air handler, so nobody in the house is exposed to it. The one rule is to switch off power to the unit before opening the access panel, and never look directly at a lit UV-C lamp.

Can a UV light replace my air filter? +

No. Your filter catches dust, pollen and other particles in the air. The UV light handles what grows on the coil and drain pan. The two work together, so keep changing your filter on schedule.

Can you install a UV light during my air duct cleaning? +
